The Dalek Invasion of Earth The Romans

The Rescue was the third story of Season 2 featuring Billy "kill all coloureds" Hartnell as the Doctor, Jacqueline "constantly blinking" Hill as Barbara, William Rustle your jimmies as Ian, and most notably it saw the introduction of Vicki, also known as "better Susan", to the TARDIS team.

Plot

The plot and setting have a rather small scale, honestly even smaller than Planet of Giants and that one was literally small scale. Basically, there's a crashed spaceship on the planet Dildo, on which are only two survivors - Vicki and Bennett. Bennett secretly drezzez for the occasion as an evil monster dude to spook Vicki into believing that the inhabitants of the planet are evil and killed off all the crew, when in fact it was actually Bennett. He did this to cover up some naughty things that he was doing before the crash. Suddenly two dudes who inhabit the planet turn up and spook him so much that he falls into a lizard pit.

You may ask yourself, where do the Doctor, Ian and Barbara fit into this? Wellllllll, they don't. I mean sure, it's not like Revelation of the Daleks where the Doctor's pretty much non existent for the runtime, but the TARDIS crew doesn't have that much bearing on the basic plot here. Not that that's a bad thing though, as they more than make up for it by helping to develop the character of Vicki into an earnest and likable lead, and their welcoming of her onboard the TARDIS is really heartwarming.

Reception

Pretty inconsequential, but then again some of the best stories are the ones that have no bearing on future events.
